Trinbago Knight Riders Rewrite History with Fifth Caribbean Premier League Title
Trinbago Knight Riders (TKR) broke their five-year wait and won their fifth Caribbean Premier League (CPL) title on Sunday, beating Guyana Amazon Warriors (GAW) by three wickets in a close, low-scoring final at Providence Stadium. With the oldest team ever in a CPL final, averaging 34 years, TKR used smart bowling and calm hitting to win. On a tricky pitch that helped spin bowlers, they showed they had the better game plan.
TKR chose to field first and got a great start. Andre Russell set the tone from the very first ball troubling the in-form Quentin Sampson with a short delivery and getting him out for a two-ball duck. Ben McDermott tried to lift the Warriors with a quick 28 off 17 balls, but Saurabh Netravalkar from USA kept the scoring under control.
The Warriors top batsmen struggled against TKR’s fast bowlers and were 57 for 3 at halfway. TKR then brought in their spinners to put more pressure. A late fightback from Iftikhar Ahmed, who scored 30 and Dwaine Pretorius, who made 25, helped the Warriors reach a total of 130 for 8. Netravalkar was TKR’s best bowler taking 3 wickets for 25 runs.
Romario Shepherd’s Expensive Over Gives TKR a Major Boost
TKR got a big boost in their chase when Romario Shepherd bowled five wides in an expensive over, giving them 22 runs. But after the first three overs, the innings slowed down as the Warriors’ spinners made it hard to score. Nicholas Pooran struggled to find form, but Sunil Narine, who hasn’t had the best season stepped up with two crucial sixes to ease the pressure.
Then Kieron Pollard really took over, smashing three huge sixes off Imran Tahir and making the chase look almost too easy, like victory was just around the corner. But Tahir fought back, taking Pollard and Russell’s wickets quickly, and Shamar Joseph got Alex Hales, which made things a bit nervy at the end. In the end, Akeal Hosein kept his cool, hitting a six and a four in the 18th over to guide his team home and wrap up the win smoothly.
