Tilak Varma Scores Century on County Debut, Silences Red-Ball Doubts
For fans who’ve only watched Tilak Varma shine in T20s, his performance in the County Championship match between Hampshire and Essex showed a new side of him. Known as one of India’s most promising young players in white-ball cricket, the 22-year-old left-hander took a big step toward his red-ball dreams. Starting Day 3 on 98 not out, Varma calmly reached his first-ever County Championship hundred, a mature and composed knock that proved he’s more than just a T20 star.
Tilak Varma walked in with the team struggling at 11 for 2 and England’s Sam Cook on a hat-trick. But under all that pressure, he showed calmness and solid technique, the kind you really want to see in a proper red-ball player. He reached his century after facing 239 balls, hitting 11 fours and 3 sixes along the way. Even during the IPL, Tilak looked like a well-rounded batter, so it’s no surprise that he’s doing so well now.
Varma Shines with Century on County Debut
He stitched together key partnerships with Fletcha Middleton (52 runs), skipper Ben Brown (43 runs), and most crucially, a 129-run unbeaten stand with Liam Dawson, who supported him well with 79 off 132 balls. Tilak’s innings was a masterclass in playing close to the body, leaving with discipline, and respecting the conditions. He was particularly impressive against off-spinner Simon Harmer, refusing to give him anything easy on a turning surface.
Speaking after reaching the milestone, Varma said, “I always say that Test cricket is my favourite game. I was waiting for this opportunity. Being a world no.3 batsman in T20Is, everybody thinks I am a good T20 batter. But I know, and I have been saying this for a long time, I am a good Test player. I love playing Test cricket, playing close to the body, being challenged, especially in English conditions. It was cold weather today in the morning so the ball was moving a bit and turning.”
Varma has etched his name alongside a select group of Indian batters by scoring a century on his County debut, joining the likes of Piyush Chawla, Murali Vijay, and Ajinkya Rahane.
Tilak Varma's Impressive First-Class Record and Timely County Stint
Playing for Hyderabad in domestic cricket, Tilak has scored over 1200 runs in 18 first-class games at an average of 50.16, with five centuries and four fifties. He has also featured for India A in the Duleep Trophy and the England Lions series in early 2024. It's fair to say Tilak picked a good time to join a County team, as India's domestic season doesn't begin until late August. He has signed up for four matches and will be available to play until the game against Worcestershire, which finishes on August 1.
