SA20 2026 Auction Announced: Date, Venue and Updated Retention Policy
The South African cricket board has officially announced that the SA20 auction will take place on September 9 in Johannesburg. A major shake-up is expected ahead of the fourth season of Cricket South Africa’s top T20 league, with at least 72 player slots available. Franchises will be eyeing fresh talent and strategic changes as they gear up for another exciting edition of the tournament.
The biggest change this season is the introduction of the Right to Match (RTM) cards, giving teams a chance to re-sign a player during the auction by matching the highest bid. Franchises are allowed to retain up to six players no more than three overseas and three South African players. Much like the Indian Premier League, the number of RTM cards available to a team will depend on how many South African players they choose to retain before the auction.
The team structure stays the same for the upcoming SA20 season each squad can have up to 18 players including a maximum of 7 overseas and at least 11 South African players. One of the biggest boosts this season is the increased salary cap, which has gone up to R41 million per team. That’s a big jump from the R34 million in Season 1 and makes SA20 the highest-paying T20 league outside of India. It’s a clear sign of how fast the league is growing and attracting top talent from around the world.
Season 4 of SA20 will see a few fresh changes while keeping things exciting for fans. Teams can once again sign a Wildcard player South African or overseas, whose fee won’t count toward the salary cap, giving them some extra room to bring in a match-winner. While the Rookie Draft has been removed, each squad must still include at least two U23 players in their final 19. Auctioneer Richard Madley returns to lead the bidding action, and the season is all set to begin on December 26, making it the perfect holiday treat for cricket lovers.
