T20 World Cup: Sri Lanka Boosts Security for IND vs PAK Clash Amid Rising Tensions
The T20 World Cup is just a few weeks away, and everyone is focusing on the IND vs PAK match in Sri Lanka on February 15. Although it seems to be the most interesting match for fans at the moment, it has a lot of attention attached to it due to the buzz surrounding it. There are geopolitical factors involved, and some provocative comments have also been coming from the Pakistan side.
Sri Lanka Gives Highest Security Priority to IND vs PAK Match in T20 World Cup
For this reason, the Sri Lankan government has increased security measures. Sri Lanka has given the “highest priority” to ensuring that the tournament goes off without a hitch and is “paying special attention to the India-Pakistan matches,” sports minister Sunil Kumara Gamage told AFP.
The teams will have elite commando units to protect both sides. “Players will be protected by armed security from the moment they leave the airport until they get back onto their plane,” said an official from India over the phone. Meanwhile, Bangladesh turned down an offer from the ICC and sought a change of venue from India to Sri Lanka for the T20 World Cup matches. They later withdrew from all tournaments after being told they could not play their games in Sri Lanka.
Pakistani players have also expressed their support for a possible ban on playing India if certain circumstances arise, including having already played against the opposition team in international matches or having opportunities to play in other events. As per an article in September’s edition of Telecom Asia Sport, Pakistan is considering the possibility of not playing India if they end up winning their previous two group matches. “If PAK won both their prior matches, this [not playing] would have an impact on the future… since no agreement currently exists between the two countries and no indication has been made as to whether we will be heading back to Pakistan anytime soon,” a PCB official stated.
Meanwhile, it also seems that the PCB is contemplating writing a letter to the ICC to lodge a protest over the entire Bangladesh situation. But for now, nothing is clear, as they are playing the waiting game.
