T20 World Cup 2026: Mumbai, Ahmedabad Lead Host Cities as ICC Awaits Final Schedule

Mumbai's iconic Wankhede Stadium has been shortlisted to host one of the two semifinals of the T20 World Cup 2026, the Indian Express reported. It added that the tournament is set to run from February 7 to March 8, with Ahmedabad's Narendra Modi Stadium shortlisted to host the first and final matches.

Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium is likely to host both the opening match and the final. The ICC still hasn’t announced the schedule for the tournament, even though it’s just a little over three months away.

Reports say the BCCI has already sent the schedule to the ICC, and the final announcement should be made in the next few days. Some of the major cities in India, Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, and Ahmedabad, are set to host the tournament. Meanwhile, Sri Lanka are the co-hosts of the World Cup two stadiums in Colombo and another in Kandy set to host the tournament.

Wankhede Likely to Host 2026 T20 World Cup Semifinal

If Sri Lanka or Pakistan reach the semifinals, that match will be held in Colombo. If neither team reaches the semifinals, then both semifinal matches will be played in India. Also, if Pakistan reach the final, that match will be held in Colombo. The report added that there is no clarity over the venues of the warm-up games, while Bengaluru might get them.

However, the BCCI has not decided whether those games, if Bengaluru gets them, will be hosted at the Centre of Excellence (CoE) or the Chinnaswamy Stadium. This is due to the stampede that took place outside the Chinnaswamy Stadium after the Royal Challengers Bengaluru won their maiden IPL in 2025.

The World Cup will include 20 teams and follow the same pattern as the 2024 version. Teams will be divided into 4 groups of 5 teams, where each team will play all other teams in its group once. The leading two teams from each group, 8 teams total, will advance to the Super-Eight phase of the competition. From this stage, four teams will qualify for the semifinals and the winning teams will play in the final match for the trophy.
