Suryakumar Yadav Removed as India T20I Captain? BCCI Reportedly Plans Major Change

:Just three months after leading India to the T20 World Cup title on home soil, Suryakumar Yadav has reportedly been removed as the captain of the T20I side and is unlikely to feature in the team's plans going forward. The development comes ahead of India’s upcoming white-ball tours of Ireland and England, which are scheduled to begin later this month.

According to reports, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), in consultation with the selection committee and team management, has decided to appoint a new captain for the next T20I cycle. Head coach Gautam Gambhir was also involved in the discussions as the board evaluated the team's long-term direction after the World Cup triumph.

A senior BCCI official told The Indian Express that the decision was taken after considering both Suryakumar’s recent form and future prospects. While acknowledging his success as captain during India’s T20 World Cup-winning campaign, the management reportedly felt that it was the right time to move in a different direction. The official also stated that Suryakumar is unlikely to be considered for selection and that the decision will be communicated to him soon.

India Set to Begin New Era in T20Is

India’s next assignment in the format consists of two T20Is against Ireland followed by a five-match series in England. The selectors are expected to announce a new captain before the squad for these tours is finalized, marking the beginning of a fresh phase for the team in the shortest format.

One of the major factors behind the decision is believed to be Suryakumar’s prolonged dip in form. Over the last two years, the star batter has struggled to replicate the consistency that once made him one of the most feared T20 batters in the world. His IPL 2026 campaign was particularly disappointing, as he managed just 270 runs in 13 innings at an average of 20.76, despite ending the season with a half-century against Rajasthan Royals.

Suryakumar was appointed India’s T20I captain after Rohit Sharma retired from the format following the 2024 T20 World Cup. Earlier this year, he spoke about how captaincy had shifted his focus away from personal milestones and towards team success. Despite the criticism surrounding his batting, he remained confident that his runs would return. However, it appears the selectors have now decided to look ahead and build a new leadership group for the future.
