Suryakumar Yadav Clears Fitness Test, Set to Captain India in Asia Cup 2025
Suryakumar Yadav will captain Team India at the Asia Cup 2025. The T20I skipper had been recovering from surgery for a lower-right abdomen hernia in June. After playing in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and Mumbai T20 League, Suryakumar traveled to Munich, Germany, for the surgery and then went to England to consult with a sports hernia specialist.
Ahead of the Asia Cup team selection on August 19, Yadav passed a fitness test at the Centre of Excellence (COE) in Bengaluru signaling that he is ready for the tournament.
“Underwent surgery for a sports hernia in the lower right abdomen. Grateful to share that after a smooth surgery, I’m already on the road to recovery. Can’t wait to be back,” Suryakumar had written while providing an update.

It was initially reported that Suryakumar Yadav wouldn’t recover in time for the India tour of Bangladesh and would miss the series. However, with the series being postponed, the Indian T20I captain checked into the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Centre of Excellence (COE) in early August for his rehabilitation.
“He has cleared his fitness and will be available to captain the Indian team during the Asia Cup. He was at the COE till a few days ago, where he underwent a rehab programme and has now been declared fit. He will be attending the Indian team selection meeting,” a Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) source confirmed.
The Asia Cup will be held in Dubai from September 9 to 28, with India set to play Pakistan on September 14. The senior selection committee will meet in Mumbai on Tuesday to finalize the squad.
Suryakumar Yadav had a brilliant IPL 2025 season with Mumbai Indians, scoring 717 runs, becoming only the second player after Sachin Tendulkar to score over 600 runs in a season for the team. He finished second on the run-scorers’ list behind Gujarat Titans' Sai Sudharsan. Mumbai reached the knockouts but lost to Punjab Kings in the second Qualifier. Suryakumar was named Player of the Series (MVP). He then captained Triumph Knights Mumbai North East in the T20 Mumbai League, scoring 122 runs, but his team finished sixth, winning just one out of five matches.
