Steve Smith Likely Set to Captain as Pat Cummins May Miss Sri Lanka Tour
Pat Cummins, the captain of Australia's cricket team, hinted in a press meeting on January 2 that he might skip the next tour in Sri Lanka starting January 29. Cummins mentioned he rather wants to be at home since he and his wife, Becky, are preparing for the arrival of their second child later this month. Cummins has a strong desire to be with his wife and their son, Albie, especially because he wasn't there for Albie's birth when he was away on tour.
His thinking is really influenced by his own life, appreciating how difficult it was for him when his mom, Maria, passed away. Cummins shared all of this while the Border-Gavaskar Trophy for the 2024-25 season is happening.

Pat Cummins Set to Miss Sri Lanka Tour; Steve Smith Expected to Take Over as Captain
The Australian cricket team is having a Test tour in Sri Lanka soon, and it looks like Steve Smith might be the new captain since Pat Cummins can't join. Cummins has to stay back because his wife, Becky Boston, is going to have their second baby around the same time. Cummins is famous for being a fast bowler and has been with the team for a long while. This is all starting because of a report from CODE Sports.
Steve Smith used to be the head of the Australian cricket team before everything got spoiled in 2018 because of a cheating scandal with the ball. That really shook things with who is the leader--but in December 2021, they wanted him to be the captain again for a short time because Pat Cummins couldn't be there due to COVID-19. And then, starting early 2023, during the last two games of a four-game series in India, Smith became the leader of the team again.
When Pat Cummins, an Australian cricketer was at the Pink Test launch for the McGrath Foundation, he noted how hard it is to handle his job and his family. Cummins told the Daily Telegraph that having a young person has changed what he thinks is important. Cummins mentioned, It's made me zero in on what matters to me, my family, playing and wholly enjoying life.
Cummins also said, My perspective on playing and going on tours has changed. I have a clearer mind now, without all the Confusion.
Cummins really stresses the incredible weightiness of remembering to have fun in the industry, even when there's always that pressure to perform well. When he was just a young person, his parents drilled into him to relish the joy of playing. Mum and Dad always said to go out there and wholly enjoy it. Do your best but remember to enjoy yourself. I try to keep that in mind every time I tour or play.
He said when professional athletes have to decide everything, it's hard because they often miss out on being with their family. He explained, every choice has something you lose out on. For instance, when I'm away on tour, I am not with my family but since it's my decision, I make sure to do my best in every game or tour.
Cummins said he was unhappy about not being there for the beginning part of his child's, Albie's life because he was busy playing in a World Cup. He mentioned, I missed a major part of his life last time. Now, I want to be at home more during those early weeks.
