South African bowler's injury row, which started on the first test against Sri Lanka, is not stopping. Another bowler, Keshav Maharaj, has been added to the list.
Maharaj sustained a growing strain during the warm-up for the series opener against Pakistan, and this will be a massive blow to South Africa’s preparation for the upcoming test series against Pakistan.
As per the report, Keshav Maharaj was in South Africa's playing 11 for the first one-day international. However, with the timely reporting of the injury, the team replaced him with the all-rounder Andile Phehlukwayo. The seriousness of the situation can be understood by the fact that he is the only premier spinner on the team. Most of the time, the team includes only one spinner in the playing XI. At the same time, Aiden Markram plays the role of secondary cum part-time spinner.
While it's still not confirmed how severe the injury is, Dane Piedt and Senuran Muthusamy can take his place in the upcoming test series against Pakistan if needed. The test series against Pakistan will be crucial for South Africa as the team need at least one victory to get into the World Test Championship Final.
This is not the first injury the team has suffered in the last month. Wiaan Mulder, Gerald Coetzee, and Anrich Nortje were injured in the last test series against Sri Lanka. Before that, Nandre Burger and Lungi Ngidi were injured and are unavailable in the ongoing series.
The continuous injuries also raise questions on the team's physio and medical staff about how the team is getting so many frequent injuries with key players.
