South Africa Call Up George Linde as Aiden Markram's Replacement for Champions Trophy Semi-Final
South African allrounder George Linde has been added to the squad as a traveling reserve for the Champions Trophy. He will be replaced by Aiden Markram, who injured his right hamstring while fielding against England and had to sit out the rest of the match. Markram's fitness will be tested during training on Tuesday evening to see if he can play in the semi-final against New Zealand.
Markram is the latest to join a long list of injured players. Before the Champions Trophy began, South Africa had already lost four fast bowlers Anrich Nortje, Gerald Coetzee, Nandre Burger, and Lizaad Williams due to injuries.
Linde will join the South African team on Tuesday evening, but he won’t officially replace unless Markram is ruled out and the ICC approves the change. South Africa has likely brought Linde as a backup if they reach the final in Dubai against India, where the dry pitch might need an extra spinner. Already they have two specialist spinners, Keshav Maharaj and Tabraiz Shamsi, but only Maharaj has played in Pakistan before. On the other hand, India used four spinners in their last match against New Zealand in Dubai.
Aiden Markram said that after the match against England, his injury wasn’t a big concern. He said it was just a precaution and not serious.
“I think it’s alright, it was mostly precautionary over anything else,” Markram said. “It feels okay. Hopefully over the next few days, I can get some good rest and then sort it out and be good to go from there.”
George Linde played a big role in helping MI Cape Town win their first-ever SA20 title in 2025. He made 161 runs in 11 matches, scoring at a good strike rate of 153.33. On top of that, he was just as effective with the ball, taking 11 wickets while keeping things tight with an economy rate of 6.29. More recently, he turned out for Western Province in the One-Day Challenge Division One, where he chipped in with 106 runs and four wickets in five games.
Left-arm fast bowler Kwena Maphaka is traveling with the squad as a reserve player. On the other hand, Temba Bavuma and Tony de Zorzi have recovered from their illness and will join the training session this evening.
