Cricket Australia is set to announce Sophie Molineux as Australia’s new all-format captain, replacing the legendary Alyssa Healy. Healy is expected to retire from international cricket after the upcoming multi-format series against India, which will run across February and March.
According to reports circulating in the media, the 28-year-old Molineux will take charge of the team once the India series concludes. Since making her international debut in March 2018, the bowling all-rounder has represented Australia in three Tests, 17 ODIs, and 38 T20Is.
Earlier this month, Healy had confirmed that the India series would be her final assignment in national colours. The series includes three T20Is, three ODIs, and a one-off Test. However, the experienced wicketkeeper-batter will not feature in the T20I leg. She explained that she wanted the team to move forward under a new leader, especially with the T20 World Cup scheduled later this year.
Molineux already has leadership experience, having captained the Melbourne Renegades in the Women’s Big Bash League since 2021. She played a key role in guiding the side to their title win in the 2024–25 season. The same reports suggest that vice-captain Tahlia McGrath was not considered for the top role due to a dip in form in recent times.
Healy also recently opened up about her decision to step away from the game. She admitted that she was no longer enjoying cricket the way she once did and felt that age was beginning to catch up with her, prompting her to bring her illustrious career to a close.
Healy shared on Willow Talk that,
"It's been a long time coming. The last few years has been probably more mentally draining than anything else. A few injuries. I've got to dive into the well, and the well is getting less and less full of water. Getting harder to dive back in there. I've always felt like I've had a competitive edge in that I want to compete, I want to win and I want to challenge myself on the park. I've felt as I've got a little bit older, I've not necessarily lost all of it, but I've lost some of that,"
Australia will be eager to get back at India for their defeat in the Women’s World Cup semi-final. In that match, the Women in Blue pulled off a stunning win by chasing a record target of 339 runs and shocking the favourites. The upcoming multi-format series between the two teams is set to begin on February 15, and it promises to be an exciting contest.
