BCCI's special tribute leaves Vaibhav Sooryavanshi emotional ahead of India debut

For most cricketers, playing for India comes after years of hard work in domestic cricket and consistent performances. They spend years trying to impress the selectors and waiting for their chance. But Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has followed a very different path. At 15, he has already become one of the most talked-about names in world cricket. Foreign media are banking on his name to promote an international series; a cricket board had to live telecast ‘A-team’ games just because of Sooryavanshi’s presence.

BCCI's special tribute caps a dream moment for Vaibhav Sooryavanshi

He has smashed IPL records, terrorised bowlers twice his age and forced selectors to make space for him in the Indian T20I side. Yet on Tuesday, all those achievements took a back seat. Because for the first time, Sooryavanshi saw his name on an India jersey.

“Words cannot explain it. The reason I picked up the bat from day one and went to the ground for practice, that dream has now been fulfilled. The biggest step in that journey was completed today. I truly cannot put this feeling into words.”

“It felt like a dream when I saw that T-shirt. I couldn’t stop smiling. Sometimes things happen that you never imagined could happen. When it finally does, you don’t know how to react. That was exactly how I felt.”

If reports are correct, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi could make his India debut in the first T20I against Ireland. With the Indian team already in Belfast, the youngster is on the verge of becoming the youngest player ever to represent India, breaking the record held by Sachin Tendulkar. Just a few months ago, Sooryavanshi was making headlines in age-group cricket. Then came IPL 2026, which changed everything.

Opening the batting for Rajasthan Royals, he scored 776 runs, won the Orange Cap, and was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. More impressive than the numbers was his fearless approach, as he attacked from the very first ball and took on experienced international bowlers without any hesitation. He followed that up with another statement performance for India A, smashing 94 off just 29 balls in the Tri-Nation Series final against Sri Lanka A. In the process, he recorded the fastest fifty in List A cricket, reaching the milestone in just 11 balls.
