Shreyas Iyer Likely to Feature in India A Squad for Australia Series After Asia Cup Snub: Reports
Shreyas Iyer’s exclusion from Team India’s Asia Cup squad and even from the list of non-travelling reserves has upset many. It also highlights how his place in the national team has been shrinking with younger players taking the spotlight ahead of him. The same trend can be seen in both Tests and T20Is.
Before the IND vs AUS series begins, India and Australia will face off in an ‘A’ series (Tests and ODIs), which could play a big role in deciding Shreyas Iyer’s future. According to a Cricbuzz report, Iyer will be part of the squad, but the bigger question is in what role. If the report is true, he might even be considered for a leadership position.
India A Squad to Be Picked After Duleep Semifinals
Shreyas Iyer is currently playing for West Zone in the Duleep Trophy, where he scored 25 before being dismissed by Khaleel Ahmed. While the knock wasn’t big, it is unlikely to affect his chances of being picked for the upcoming red-ball games and possibly even the white-ball matches. Despite missing out on the Asia Cup T20 squad starting September 9 in the UAE, his name being considered for red-ball cricket suggests he is still in the mix for future series including the home Tests against West Indies in October and the away series in Australia.
The selectors are likely to pick the India A squad after the Duleep Trophy semifinals on September 7. Along with Iyer, they may consider top performers from the tournament and players like Nitish Reddy, A Easwaran, Sai Sudharsan, N Jagadeesan, Ruturaj Gaikwad, and Rajat Patidar. India A will play two four-day matches against Australia A in Lucknow (starting September 16 and 23) and then three white-ball games in Kanpur on September 30, October 3, and October 5.
