RCB Executives and State Officials Face Arrests and Suspensions in Chinnaswamy Stampede Investigation

The series of arrests and dismissals related to the tragic events near Chinnaswamy Stadium continued on Friday (June 6). Police raided the home of Rajesh Menon, Head and Vice President of Royal Challengers Bengaluru, but Menon is reportedly on the run. Authorities are also investigating K.T. Majeed, Director and CFO of DNA Event Management along with Karnataka State Cricket Association Secretary A. Shankar and Treasurer Jayaram. Both Shankar and Jayaram have resigned from their posts.

K Govindaraj, the Karnataka Chief Minister’s secretary, was also removed from his position by the state government. This may be due to inconsistencies in his statements to different media outlets. An official notification said, “The appointment of K Govindaraj as Political Secretary to the Chief Minister is revoked with immediate effect. He is hereby relieved from the post immediately.”

Compensation Offered to Victims’ Families, but Questions Remain on Accountability

Meanwhile, Hemant Nimbalkar, the head of the state intelligence department, has been transferred. This comes along with the suspension of several senior police officers and the arrests of Nikhil Sosale, RCB’s Head of Marketing and Revenue; Kiran Kumar, Senior Event Manager at DNA Networks; and Sunil Mathew, Vice President of Business Affairs at DNA Networks.

Chief Minister Siddaramiah defended the recent sackings and suspensions, saying, “They are doing this for politics. I don’t do politics. We have taken action against those who were clearly responsible,” according to ANI.

A social activist reportedly went to Cubbon Park police station to file an FIR against RCB’s key batsman, Virat Kohli. In short, the state government has taken a series of actions.

The RCB team and the state government have also offered compensation to the families of those who lost their lives. But where does the responsibility truly end? No amount of compensation can bring back those who died in the stampede during RCB’s victory celebrations. Sadly, all the victims were under the age of 40.
