R Ashwin Praises Jamie Overton's Sportsmanship After Non-Striker Run-Out Warning in Big Bash League
Jamie Overton warned a batter at the non-striker's end in a Major Big Bash League match, and R Ashwin was excited about it. Since they will both be part of Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2025, this particular one that happened is a major deal.
During the New Year's Eve match at the Adelaide Oval, Ashwin was an advocate for Overton's planning insight. Overton spotted that Finn Allen, the batter from the opposing team, was leaving the non-striker's crease too early before he finished his run-up. In the Perth Scorchers' 8th over chase against Adelaide Strikers, Overton could have gotten Allen out by breaking the stumps, but he decided not to. He just calmly told Allen to be careful and stay in his crease instead.

Ashwin has always backed this manner of getting a batter out. He first did it in 2019 during an IPL game when he ran out the player named Jos Buttler, sparking a lot of different reactions but Ashwin didn't change his mind regarding it. Getting rid of a player up to now has always made people argue regarding whether it's fair play but then in October 2022, the ICC changed things by saying this move was just another form of run out, making it clear it's all part of the game.
Allen wasn't fazed a bit, even after some words with Overton, who was visibly unhappy for letting 18 runs slip in his first over. Instead, Allen came back extremely strong, hitting a fast fifty in just 23 balls. This wasn't simply a solo show though. Cooper Connolly and Ashton Turner also helped, with Connolly scoring 48 runs off 35 balls and Turner keeping it quite steady with an unbeaten 35 off 18 balls. All of this teamwork pushed the Scorchers to a solid win.
The Scorchers got their win and moved up to second spot in the standings, they've now got 6 points after playing 5 matches.
With Ashwin and Overton teaming up for IPL 2025, their shared focus on playing by the rules adds an interesting layer to their partnership.
