BBL 2026 Opener in Chennai? Cricket Australia Awaits BCCI Approval for Historic India Match

Cricket Australia is reportedly thinking about starting the next Big Bash League (BBL) season with its opening match in India. The idea comes as two of the eight BBL teams may soon be sold, and the board wants to tap into the large Indian cricket market. Right now, the Indian Premier League (IPL) is the only major T20 league played in India every year.

According to SEN Cricket, two Cricket Australia officials have travelled to Chennai to check if the city can host the opening match of the Big Bash League. The officials, Phil Rigby and Margot Harley, visited the Tamil Nadu capital to hold discussions and study the logistical challenges of staging a BBL match outside Australia, the report said.

BBL Opener in Chennai? Cricket Australia Eyes India Market, Awaiting BCCI Approval

The report claims that Perth Scorchers could be one side which will play in Chennai, owing to the time zone and the willingness of the West Australia Cricket Association (WACA) to consider offers from some prominent Indian businessmen. However, in order for the deal to be completed, CA must get approvals from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), the stakeholders and the broadcaster.

“A deal is far from complete, given approval would need to be granted from various stakeholders, including broadcasters and the BCCI. As Cricket Australia leans into the Indian market, there is a view among key figures that an annual game in Chennai could boost the sport in the same way rugby league has ventured to Las Vegas in recent times,” the report states.

A Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) official told Cricbuzz that the board has received the proposal and has forwarded it to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for further consideration.

“We have heard their proposal and are fully aware of our jurisdiction. The TNCA has left the matter to the BCCI. We have made it clear to the Australian delegation that without BCCI approval, the plan cannot move forward,” a TNCA official said.

The Big Bash League (BBL) usually takes place in the December-January window. The first game of the BBL 2025/26 edition was held on December 14 last year. It will be interesting to see what will BCCI’s stance be.
