Chennai Set to Host Historic First-Ever BBL Match at Chepauk in December

The MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai is set to host its first-ever Big Bash League (BBL) match later this year. The famous venue has previously hosted IPL and international matches, but this will be the first BBL game there. Earlier in February, reports said that Cricket Australia wanted to explore the Indian market by holding the opening match of BBL 16 in Chennai.

Now, the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association has confirmed the development, while an official announcement from Cricket Australia is still awaited. As per reports, a TNCA source confirmed that the opening match of BBL 16 will be played at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai during the second week of December. A five-member team from Cricket Australia reportedly visited the stadium on Monday for an inspection. The officials were also present during the IPL 2026 match between Chennai Super Kings and Sunrisers Hyderabad to assess the venue and arrangements.

The reports also claim that CA has recieved a positive response from the BCCI over the matter, even though the latter was not interested in the matter earlier. However, a CA source told the publication that nothing has been confirmed yet, while the board is in talks with the BCCI and are exploring the option of hosting the game in Chennai as a part of efforts to boost the India-Australia relationship.

“We are not able to confirm anything. We are exploring the potential of Chennai in partnership with the Australian Government to drive the India-Australia relationship. Nothing confirmed as yet, and we are working closely with our friends in BCCI,” a CA representative said.

The report also claimed that Mithun Manhas is currently in Chennai to meet Cricket Australia officials regarding the proposed BBL opener. According to SEN Cricket, two Cricket Australia officials had earlier visited Chennai in February to explore the possibility of hosting the opening game of BBL 16 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium.

 The report claimed that Perth Scorchers could be one side which will play in Chennai, owing to the time zone and the willingness of the West Australia Cricket Association (WACA) to consider offers from some prominent Indian businessmen. The Big Bash League (BBL) usually takes place in the December-January window. The first game of the BBL 2025/26 edition was held on December 14 last year.
