Pakistan vs Sri Lanka Asia Cup 2025: Pakistan Win by 5 Wickets in Super Four Clash

Pakistan defeated Sri Lanka by five wickets in their second Super Four game of the Asia Cup. After a big loss to India, Salman Agha’s team badly needed this win to stay alive for a spot in the final. At the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi, Pakistan’s bowlers set the tone with a strong performance, making the chase look easy at first. But once again, the batters made it tense before finally crossing the line.
Pakistan bowled out Sri Lanka for just 133 runs in the first innings. Shaheen Afridi was the star with the new ball, picking up three wickets, including two in the powerplay, which put Sri Lanka on the back foot early. Despite the collapse, Kamindu Mendis fought hard and scored a half-century to give his team a respectable total.
Haris Rauf and Hussain Talat also chipped in with two wickets each. But the highlight of the innings came when Abrar Ahmad dismissed Wanindu Hasaranga for 15 runs. Abrar mocked Hasaranga by doing his trademark celebration, and the clip quickly went viral on social media.
Sri Lanka’s spinners then tried to bring their team back into the game. Hasaranga took a brilliant catch to dismiss Saim Ayub and immediately responded to Abrar’s earlier gesture by doing his own celebration. Later, he and Maheesh Theekshana picked up two wickets each, slowing Pakistan’s chase. At one stage, Pakistan looked under pressure, but Hussain Talat and Mohammad Nawaz built a steady partnership to guide the team home.
Salman Ali Agha (Pakistan captain): "I always smile. Can't say it was a perfect game. We lost four wickets in three overs, but apart from that, it could be a perfect game but we need to stop doing that. We have been doing that since Sharjah and we need to stop that.
Shane McDermott (fielding coach) has been working with players really hard. We have named him rockstar, and are working hard with him. I have seen people doing extra things as well, and when you do this extra stuff, it does pay off in the ground."
Charith Asalanka (Sri Lanka captain): "If we lose 5 wickets before the 10 overs, it will always be hard. The surface was good. But they bowled and fielded very well in the first 10 overs. The happy thing is that we did not give up after scoring only 133 runs. Wanindu Hasaranga is a superstar with the ball. He has done so many good things for the country and he continues to do so."
Sri Lanka’s Qualification Chances
Sri Lanka will be out if Bangladesh lose to India tomorrow in Dubai. That result will also confirm India’s place in the final.
For Sri Lanka to qualify, Bangladesh must beat both India and Pakistan. After that, Sri Lanka need to beat India by a big margin in their last Super Four match on Friday.
