New BCCI Secretary Directed to Drop Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli: "Must Send a Firm Message"
There's been a lot of discussions recently because India hasn't been doing well in the five match test series against Australia, Captains Rohit Sharma and Ex-Captain Virat Kohli in trouble. A short time ago, everyone kept talking about how amazing these two were for leading India to win the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. But now, their poor performance in the test series has everyone looking closely at how they play.
India just went through a very hard period in cricket, losing series at home for the first time since the 2012/13 season with an 3-0 defeat against New Zealand. Then, things stayed the same because they lost 3-1 to Australia, which hadn't happened in ten years, since the 2014/15 season. The major worry is about two of their main players, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, who couldn't really help the team much.
Rohit only obtained 91 runs in the games against New Zealand and did even worse against Australia, scoring a 31 runs over three Tests. Kohli wasn't played well, scoring 93 runs versus New Zealand series and 190 against Australia series; but it is a minor issue since a lot of those runs came from just one large game. Their lack of performance is a major concern now, considering how important they've been for the team before.
BCCI official speaks on the situation of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli:
A lot of people are discussing if Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli should still play in the Indian Test team after India didn't make it to the World Test Championship final. Some think the team should focus on bringing in fresh faces instead of staying in touch with the older players.
Sunday, the special general meeting is where they plan to discuss the problem. We're not sure what will happen but an old BCCI official told the new secretary, Devajit Saikia, he should really take charge and deal with this well.
The official was worried because the current crisis made the BCCI look weak and highlighted how key it is to stay strong. They mentioned that the industry is more important than any single player, which could mean Rohit and Kohli might be dropped.
In an interview with Dainik Jagran, the official mentioned that the people are seeing things is beginning to look very bad. They said that the BCCI has to show some real leadership in Indian cricket. Even though people can say what they think on social media, it's very important that no player thinks they're more important than the game.
The official further emphasized that it is time to choose a new team, suggesting that the selection committee under Ajit Agarkar should be called in for discussions, with a clear directive to move forward.
Rohit and Kohli have been doing great in white ball cricket, and they're hoping to keep that in the Champions Trophy starting on February 19. Even though it's not sure what's happening with their test careers, they're likely to play for India in this major tournament. India has been put in Group A, which is very hard with teams like Pakistan, Bangladesh, and New Zealand. The goal is to be one of the top two teams in the group to make it to the semifinals.
