Melbourne Stars Appoint Marcus Stoinis as New Captain for BBL 14

Melbourne Stars Appoint Marcus Stoinis as New Captain for BBL 14Australia all-rounder Marcus Stoinis has been appointed as the new captain of the Melbourne Stars ahead of the Big Bash League Season 14, replacing Glenn Maxwell. Maxwell stepped down from the role after the 13th season, where the Stars finished 6th and failed to make it to the finals.

Stoinis has been with the Stars since BBL's third season and had briefly taken over the captaincy in the 2023-24 season when Maxwell was out of the action due to injury. Interestingly, both Stoinis and Maxwell will be back together again in the IPL 2025 season as they have both been signed by the Punjab Kings.

"I had a little bit of a taste of captaining the side in Maxi's absence last year and loved the opportunity, so to be given the role full-time is a great honour," Stoinis said.

"The Stars have been such a constant in my life every summer for the last 10 years, and I truly believe that the group we have assembled, both on and off the field, can bring some long-overdue success to the club," he added.

Stars General Manager Blair Crouch praised Glenn Maxwell for his outstanding leadership over the past five seasons and expressed confidence in Marcus Stoinis’s ability to lead the team moving forward.

"First of all, I want to acknowledge and thank Glenn Maxwell for all his efforts in leading the side over the past five seasons. He will continue to be a wonderful resource for everyone at the club," Crouch said.

"Marcus demonstrated his leadership ability last year and has been a senior member of the side for a long time. It's fantastic to have someone who has been with the Stars almost since our inception stepping up to lead the club in BBL 14," he added.

Glenn Maxwell's Injury Leaves Melbourne Stars Uncertain for Season Opener

The Melbourne Stars are going to start BBL14 with a weak lineup as Marcus Stoinis is set to take up his new role as captain.

Glenn Maxwell's recuperation timeline from hamstring remains unknown, casting doubt on his availability for the season's opening game. Scott Boland and Beau Webster will be out of games since they have been named in Australia's Test squad. Overseas recruits Ben Duckett and Osama Mir would also miss the first three matches due to prior commitments.

The Melbourne Renegades, though, have strengthened their side ahead of BBL14 as they have signed Victoria duo Marcus Harris and Xavier Crone.

Meanwhile, the Brisbane Heat have reacted to the injury crisis by signing all-rounder Jack Wildermuth and are set to augment their ranks with three local replacement players in the week ahead. This follows news of Michael Neser's hamstring injury, and on top of that, Usman Khawaja and Marnus Labuschagne will not be available until the Australia and India Test series concludes in early January.
