Karnataka Government Grants Clearance to Chinnaswamy Stadium for IPL and International Matches

The state government of Karnataka has given its approval to the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) to play cricket matches at M Chinnaswamy Stadium. After the stampede at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on June 4 in Bengaluru, where 11 people had died and some 50 injured, the ground has been found to be unsuitable for holding such a large number of people. The state of Karnataka had directed the KSCA to sort out the problems to obtain permission to conduct any cricket matches there.

Karnataka Govt Grants Conditional Approval to KSCA, Allowing RCB to Return to Chinnaswamy Stadium for IPL 2026

The government's decision left KSCA to skip the right to host the Women's ODI World Cup 2025, Maharaja Trophy 2025, the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2025-26, and T20 World Cup 2026 events to be held at Bengaluru.

However, this had made the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) team homeless. Just yesterday, the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 champions had agreed to commit a contribution of INR 4.50 crores for the installation of 300 to 350 AI cameras to the KSCA.

KSCA announced through a press note,

“The permission is conditional on complying with certain terms and conditions stipulated by the Government and the Authorities concerned. KSCA is confident on its ability to meet all the stipulations in the conditions. KSCA has already placed their compliance plan before the Expert Review Committee and is committed to implement all safety, security, and crowd management measures in letter and spirit,”

However, RCB have chosen the DY Patil Sports Academy in Navi Mumbai, along with the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh Stadium in Raipur, as the possible venues in India for the hosting of their IPL 2026 home games. Fortunately for RCB, the Karnataka government has given KSCA approval to RCB to play their home games at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.
