Kane Williamson Makes Comeback for England Series; Nathan Smith Earns Debut Test Call-Up

Kane Williamson Makes Comeback for England Series; Nathan Smith Earns Debut Test Call-Up

Kane Williamson has overcome a groin injury that sidelined him during New Zealand's recent tour of India, marking his return to the squad set to face England. In a significant move, Wellington allrounder Nathan Smith has been granted his first Test call-up, a testament to his impressive domestic performances.

Joining the ranks for the upcoming series is uncapped seamer Jacob Duffy, who fills the void left by injured seamers Ben Sears (knee) and Kyle Jamieson (back). Meanwhile, left-arm spinner Mitchell Santner, who claimed 13 wickets in Pune, is set to bolster the squad for the second and third Tests scheduled in Wellington and Hamilton. The series is set to kick off with the opening Test in Christchurch on November 28.

Smith, aged 26, made his international debut in the first ODI against Sri Lanka earlier this week. His outstanding performance in the previous Plunket Shield season, where he was the leading wicket-taker with 33 dismissals at an average of 17.18, earned him a central contract in September. Additionally, he had an impressive stint with Worcestershire in the County Championship, capturing 27 wickets at 21.14 and scoring three half-centuries.

Ajaz Patel, who took 15 wickets against India, has been left out of the squad, ensuring his record of claiming all 85 of his Test wickets on foreign soil remains unchallenged for now.

Williamson's return might pose a selection dilemma, potentially putting pressure on Will Young, the standout performer during the India series, to retain his place in the playing XI.

In a separate announcement made earlier on Friday, veteran pacer Tim Southee revealed his intention to retire from Test cricket following the England series, unless New Zealand progresses to the World Test Championship final. The recent 3-0 triumph over India has kept their hopes alive for another shot at the prestigious final, though the road ahead remains challenging.
