Jay Shah: The Youngest ICC Chairman

Jay Shah: The Youngest ICC Chairman
With cricket becoming more popular worldwide and its top body eyeing global expansion beyond just 10-12 top Nations, ICC got its new chairman. Jay Shah assumed the role of International Cricket Council (ICC) chairman and became the youngest person to hold that position at the age of 35, succeeding Greg Barclay who served from 2020 to 2024. It was intriguing that Shah was elected unanimously for the role, becoming the 5th Indian to lead the top global body for cricket after Jagmohan Dalmiya, Sharad Pawar, Shashank Manohar, and N Srinivasan who held influential positions in the ICC.

Shas’s Experience with Cricket Administration

Jay Shah has marked his name in sports administration with his unique working style. In 2009, Shah started his career at district-level administration in Ahmedabad. In 2013, he became the Joint Secretary of the Gujarat Cricket Association and later, became the BCCI Secretary and head of the Asian Cricket Council.
He has shown a meteoric rise in the Cricket Administration. Despite doing a great job in every role, some critics joined his journey to nepotism.

His BCCI leadership

Under his leadership there has been a no. of commendable work he did during his BCCI’s secretary role, whether it's about women's cricket or about domestic cricket. Shah played an influential role in the start of the Women's Premier League in parallel to IPL along with this he also led an initiative for equal contract pay for both men and women cricketers, raising the women’s cricketer pay to the level of men's player.
In domestic cricket, he increased the match fee in Ranji Trophy matches and a special scheme to promote the game’s longest format.

Shah’s notable achievement includes the infrastructure development for cricket in India he works on both the player's side infrastructure and the spectator's side infrastructure. The completion of the world's largest cricket stadium in Ahmedabad was done under his GCA’s leadership. He also worked on the transformation of the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru. The new NCA facility features a three-word class ground for different conditions, 45 practice pitches and state-of-the-art modern training facilities.

Challenges and Opportunities

As he becomes the ICC Chairman, a lot of challenges are waiting for him to address, The first one is the scheduling and hosting issues of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, where the Pakistan cricket board is demanding the full Champion trophy to be hosted in Pakistan and on the other side Indian team as informed the ICC about its inability to go to Pakistan because of the security concerns. Additionally, The LA28 Olympics’s cricket inclusion is both an opportunity and a challenge for him to drive to a successful start.
Shah’s commercial acumen has always impressed everyone involved whether it's making the BCCI’s finances better or big-ticket Media rights negotiation and sale. His experience with managing cricket's richest board finances will be a plus for the ICC.
The cricket world watches with interest as Shah takes charge at a crucial time and leads the ICC for the next few years.
