IPL 2025: Sick but Unstoppable, Abhishek Sharma Smashes IPL Record in Epic Chase Against PBKS

IPL 2025: Sick but Unstoppable, Abhishek Sharma Smashes IPL Record in Epic Chase Against PBKSAbhishek Sharma was in top form when Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) faced Punjab Kings (PBKS) in their IPL 2025 match on Saturday, April 12, at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad. The young left-hander played a brilliant knock and helped SRH chase down a massive target of 246 runs with nine balls remaining, leading his team to a memorable win.

Abhishek created history in the IPL by scoring the highest individual score by an Indian, a brilliant 141 runs from just 55 balls. His innings included 14 fours and 10 sixes. He and Travis Head gave their team a flying start, putting together a massive 171-run opening partnership in just 12.2 overs.

After Head got out to Yuzvendra Chahal, Abhishek stepped up and took control of the innings, staying there till the very end. Later, the left-hander shared that he had been unwell, but still pushed through. He also thanked former all-rounder Yuvraj Singh and Mumbai Indians batter Suryakumar Yadav for their support and encouragement during this time.

"To be honest, I was sick for four days-I had a fever. But I feel really grateful to have people like Yuvraj Singh and Suryakumar Yadav around me. They kept calling, kept checking in, and they believed in me," Abhishek said in the post-match press conference.

"Even when I started to doubt myself a little, they didn't. That belief from people like them-it matters a lot. When someone like that believes in you, you start believing in yourself again. For me, it was just about that one innings. I was waiting for it. And today it came," Abhishek added.

Abhishek Sharma’s Record-Breaking 141 Powers SRH to Epic Chase

Abhishek has scored 192 runs in six matches, with an average of 32 and an impressive strike rate of 202.10. But before the game against Punjab Kings, he had only managed 51 runs at an average of 10.50. Abhishek admitted he did feel the pressure during that rough patch, but he also said there was no negativity in the Sunrisers Hyderabad camp, which helped him stay positive.

"Of course - if I say there wasn't, I'd be lying. When you don't perform well for three or four innings, and the team loses, the pressure does build up on individual players. But like I said during the post-match ceremony, I never felt any negativity in the team. No one had the mindset of 'we're losing.' Everyone stayed positive," Abhishek said.

"We all knew something big was coming from the team-and luckily, we got to break that four-match losing streak today," Abhishek added.

With their win on Saturday, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) finally ended their four-game losing streak. The victory helped them move up to eighth place on the points table with four points. However, their net run rate is still on the lower side at -1.245. Up next, they’ll take on the Mumbai Indians (MI) on April 17 at the Wankhede Stadium.
