[ Poll: zL36Rbyv ]

In the 20th match of the Women's World Cup, England women defeated India by four runs in a thrilling match to take second place in the points table. Batting first in Indore, England scored 288 for eight in 50 overs, thanks to a brilliant century from captain Heather Knight (109) and a half-century from Amy Jones (56).

India Lose by 4 Runs Despite Strong Efforts from Mandhana and Harmanpreet Kaur

Chasing the target, India could only manage 284 for six in their allotted 50 overs, losing the match by four runs. Smriti Mandhana (88), Harmanpreet Kaur (70), and Deepti Sharma (50) scored brilliant half-centuries for India. Nat Sciver-Brunt took two wickets for England, while Lauren Bell, Linsey Smith, Charlie Dean, and Sophie Ecclestone each took one wicket.

The Indian women's team has suffered its third consecutive defeat in the current tournament. Before England, India had defeated Australia by three wickets and South Africa by three wickets. The Harmanpreet Kaur-led team has played five matches so far, winning two and losing three. India is fourth in the points table with four points and a net run rate of +0.526. To qualify for the semi-finals, India will now need to win both of its remaining matches.

Meanwhile, England, having won four out of five matches, has moved to second place with nine points and a net run rate of +1.490, becoming the third team to reach the semi-finals. Australia remains at the top, while South Africa has slipped to third place with eight points. Both teams have already qualified for the semi-finals.

England's Heather Knight played a brilliant innings of 109 runs (91 balls, 15 fours, 1 six) and laid the foundation for the team's victory. Amy Jones, along with her, played a crucial innings of 56 runs. The duo shared a 73-run partnership for the first wicket, giving England a solid start. Deepti Sharma was the best bowler for India, taking four wickets for just 51 runs. Besides her, Shree Charni took two wickets (68 runs). Knight and Nat Sciver-Brunt (40) shared a 113-run partnership for the third wicket, taking England past 250. However, England's innings faltered after Knight's run-out, and the team lost five wickets in the final six overs, adding just 42 runs.

Even half-centuries from three Indian batsmen failed to secure victory. Chasing the target, India got off to a poor start. The early dismissals of Pratika Rawal (0) and Harleen Deol (12) in the powerplay increased the pressure on the team. Smriti Mandhana (88) and Harmanpreet Kaur (70) then put India in a strong position with a 125-run partnership for the third wicket.

Harmanpreet was caught by Charlie Dean, while Mandhana was caught at long on by Linsey Smith. Deepti Sharma (50) then scored a useful half-century and shared a 69-run partnership with Mandhana, keeping India's hopes alive. But England's bowlers made a brilliant comeback in the last overs. Nat Sciver-Brunt took 2/47 for England, while Smith, Dean, Ecclestone and Bell took one wicket each. India were cruising at 234/3, but the team's momentum was broken by the consecutive dismissals of Mandhana, Richa Ghosh and Deepti.
