IND vs SA 2nd Test: Gill Ruled Out, Nitish Kumar Reddy Expected to Feature in Playing XI

A big update has come in just before the second Test between India and South Africa. India, who are already 1-0 down in the two-match series, have now suffered another blow, captain Shubman Gill has been ruled out of the must-win match. Gill, who got injured and retired hurt during the Kolkata Test, had travelled with the team on Wednesday. He didn’t take part in Thursday’s practice session, but the team was still hoping he might recover in time.
According to the Times of India, Gill has now been released from the squad and will return to Mumbai to continue his recovery. He won’t be working with the BCCI’s physios at the CoE for now, but he will stay in Mumbai for a few days and meet Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala. With this injury, his participation in the ODI series starting November 30 has also become uncertain.
Shubman Gill Ruled Out of Second Test Due to Neck Injury
The neck injury Gill picked up in Kolkata looked serious from the start, and every update since then pointed in the same direction. Gill left the pitch clutching the back of his neck, retired hurt after only three balls and was admitted to the hospital later that evening when the stiffness got worse.
Since Gill is one of Team India’s most valuable assets and leads in two formats, it was assumed for the majority of the last 48 hours that he shouldn’t be risked. Gill was wearing a neck brace when he was taken to Woodlands Hospital in Kolkata.
Nitish Kumar Reddy Likely to Join Playing XI
It was surprising to see him travel with the team to Guwahati, where the Barsapara Stadium will host its first-ever Test match. Even so, India was still unsure if he would be able to play, and his selection depended on how well he recovered. However, in a few hours from then, the news of Gill getting released from India’s squad broke out. With Nitish Kumar Reddy already joining the team ahead of the second Test, he is likely to feature in the playing lineup.
“Gill is recovering really well. Now, the decision will be taken tomorrow evening. Even if he’s fully recovered, we have to ensure he doesn’t spasm in the game again. The doctor and physio’s concern is this. If they’re sure it won’t happen, then he’ll play. Else he will rest for another game,” Kotak said
As for a direct swap with Gill, Sai Sudharsan seems the likely candidate. Sudharsan was surprisingly dropped from the opening Test in Kolkata despite the management backing him at No. 3 in the last two series. Washington Sundar was sent in to bat at one-down and he did a good job. Dhruv Jurel, who played only as a batter in the last match, is now likely to bat at number four, which Kotak also hinted at. With Gill not available, India will have to make several changes to their lineup, which isn’t ideal before such an important must-win match.
