IND vs ENG: Yashasvi Jaiswal Creates History with Highest Score by Indian Opener at Edgbaston

IND vs ENG 2nd Test Yashasvi Jaiswal Creates History with Highest Score by Indian Opener at EdgbastonThere’s something about playing against England that seems to bring out the best in Yashasvi Jaiswal. Out of the 21 Test matches he’s played so far, seven have been against England about a third of his total games. Yet, he’s scored more than 45% of his total Test runs against them (904 out of 1990). And it’s not just home advantage Jaiswal has already scored a fifty and a century in just three innings on English soil.

As of now, Yashasvi Jaiswal averages over 64 in England a rare feat, even with just three innings played. The young opener is clearly a special talent. Despite making his Test debut less than two years ago, he already has 16 scores of fifty or more for India, trailing only Rishabh Pant and Rohit Sharma, both of whom have played 20 more innings than him. Jaiswal narrowly missed becoming the fastest Indian to reach 2,000 Test runs falling just 10 runs short, but he still has the chance to equal the record held by Rahul Dravid and Virender Sehwag in his next innings.

Umpire’s Call Saves Jaiswal in Early Scare During Tricky Opening Spell

Jaiswal began his innings with caution, showing respect to the early movement offered by Chris Woakes and Brydon Carse. The ball was doing a bit in the air and off the pitch, and he had a close call in the seventh over when Woakes trapped him on the front pad only for the umpire’s call to go in his favour. There were a few moments when Jaiswal went for his shots and was fortunate not to edge the ball, but he held his composure through a tricky opening spell.

Once the initial pressure eased, Jaiswal shifted gears. From the 12th over onward, a more confident version of him took charge. Josh Tongue replaced Carse, and Ben Stokes came in for Woakes after a disciplined seven-over burst. England’s third and fourth seamers lacked consistency, and Jaiswal capitalised. The short-ball tactic that failed in Headingley didn’t work here either. Unlike the last Test, where he was more restrained, Jaiswal was aggressive this time. He punished Tongue, hitting six boundaries off him including three in a row in the 22nd over to bring up a well-paced fifty off 59 balls.

Jaiswal Falls for 87, Chasing Century with Loose Shot Against Stokes

Jaiswal looked on course for his sixth Test hundred, reaching lunch unbeaten on 62 off 69 balls. After the break, England shifted their strategy again keeping the field open and returning to the short-ball tactic this time with Brydon Carse leading the charge. Aware of the threat and the need for a solid stand with Shubman Gill, who was still in single digits, Jaiswal smartly chose to play it safe, picking up singles and waiting for the pressure to ease.

England’s focus shifted to attacking Gill, offering Jaiswal easy singles in return. By the 20th over of the session, he had faced just 37 balls for 25 runs since lunch. The plan was working until Jaiswal, eager to reach his century, went for a risky shot and mistimed it. Ben Stokes capitalised, dismissing him for 87 cutting short what looked like another brilliant hundred.
