The 3rd test match couldn't give any result as it was mainly affected by rain; during the five days, only 217 overs were bowled. The first day was the most rain-affected game day, with only 13 overs bowled. The match showcased special performances like Travis Head’s 152, who continued his ruthless batting form against India, whereas Steve Smith also scored a century in the first inning. Australia scored 445 in the first innings.
India’s Struggle in its First Innings
In Australia's first inning massive score, India struggled during its batting and could score only 260 runs in the first innings, giving 185 run leads to Australia. KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja were top scorers from the Indian side. Rahul scored 84 runs in 139 balls with eight boundaries, while Jadeja scored 171 in 123 balls, hitting seven boundaries and a six.
The Survival to Save Follow-On
A few interesting overs happened during the last half an hour of day 4. India was required to reach 245 to save the following word; it has already lost 9 of its wickets at a score of 213. The fight that Jaspreet Bumrah and Akashdeep showed to save the following was commendable, and the celebration after saving the follow-on showed how important that partnership was for India.
On the 5th day, what happened wasn't expected. In the match, which seemed to be a draw, Australia decided to bat fast, score some quick runs and set a target for India. While trying to do that, Australia lost wickets quickly and was 89/7 when they declared.
Australia set India a target of 275 with about 40 to 50 overs remaining in the match. This could have been achieved if they had batted for 30 to 40 overs, as India had chased a similar target in the last Border Gavaskar trophy at the same ground. However, due to the rain, the match was called off around Tea.
With this match drawn and both teams winning one match each, the race Test Championship Final has become more complicated. Both teams must win the last two matches to get into the finals. For India, it's a must, but for Australia, they still have too much left against Sri Lanka after this series.
