ICC T20 World Cup 2026: What do Pakistan need to do to avoid elimination?

Pakistan have been handed their first 2026 T20 World Cup win, with their Net Run Rate suffering a heavy blow as India beat them by 61 runs. The loss saw them slip to third place. The USA, who have the same points as Pakistan (4), occupy the second spot due to a better NRR.

A win vs Namibia would do the job for Pakistan

With only the top two teams qualifying from each group, Pakistan need to ensure they get the remaining two points in their next fixture against Namibia to confirm their qualification to the Super Eights.

A win, no matter how close, would take them to six points. The USA have already played all four of their matches, winning two and losing as many, which means the maximum points they can reach are four.

The equation becomes more complicated if India lose to the Netherlands and Pakistan lose to Namibia. In that case, Namibia would move to four points, joining the USA and Pakistan on the same number. This means NRR will decide which team goes ahead to the Super Eights, giving the USA a better chance of doing so.

India, meanwhile, are unaffected by these permutations. With their six points, winning three of their three matches, they have already secured their place in the next stage.

Scenarios for Pakistan’s qualification

If they beat Namibia:

They will rise to six points, and NRR will not matter, as none of the other teams can surpass four points.

If they lose to Namibia:

Pakistan would have just four points. They would hope their NRR, currently at -0.403, somehow improves, despite the defeat, beyond the USA, whose NRR stands at 0.788.

Besides that, they’d also need India to defeat the Netherlands, who could mathematically have a better NRR than Pakistan with a win.
