ICC Sets Up Committee to Resolve BCCI-PCB Asia Cup Trophy Issue

[ Poll: AL7852ZO ]

The International Cricket Council (ICC) convened in Dubai on Friday to address a variety of topics, chief among them was the expansion of the Women’s World Cup, along with cricket's participation in the Olympics, and Mithali Raj accepting a position on the ICC Women’s Cricket Committee.

ICC Forms Committee to Resolve Asia Cup 2025 Trophy Dispute Between India and Pakistan

However, for Indian fans, the biggest source of discussion was the Asia Cup trophy. India claimed the Asia Cup 2025 on September 28 under captain Suryakumar Yadav’s leadership; neither the team nor Indian fans in general have yet seen their trophy. This is because the chief of the Pakistan Cricket Board, Mohsin Naqvi also Chairman of the Asian Cricket Council, had possession of the trophy, and given the long-standing acrimony between the two nations, nobody from the Indian team would receive the trophy from him.

According to sources, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) brought this topic up in the ICC meeting. The ICC Board unanimously agreed that both India and Pakistan are extremely significant for cricket worldwide, and asserted that issues must be mediated peacefully and diplomatically. Further, the Board agreed to establish a committee to address the issue of the Asia Cup trophy expeditiously so that India can finally receive its trophy. Since the discussion of the trophy was not an official agenda item, it will not appear in the minutes from the meeting.

The problem arose after India defeated Salman Agha's Pakistan squad by five wickets at Dubai International Stadium to win their ninth Asia Cup. What made the celebration unusual was that the Indian team declined the trophy and medals from Mohsin Naqvi, which then left India without an official trophy ceremony. The BCCI has attempted to solve the matter; however, it is still lingering somewhat.

On a more positive note for Indian cricket fans, the ICC also announced that the Women's ODI World Cup in 2029 will also expand from eight teams to ten. This comes on the heels of India's historic win on November 2. India defeated South Africa by 52 runs in the final in Navi Mumbai and earned their first global women's cricket trophy. "The ICC Board felt that the success of this edition has been something to build upon and has therefore agreed to expand the next edition of the tournament to 10 teams," the ICC stated.
