ICC to Expand Women’s World Cup to 10 Teams After Record-Breaking 2025 Tournament
According to news agency PTI, the ICC decided on November 7 to increase the number of teams in the Women’s World Cup from 8 to 10 starting in 2029. This change comes after the 2025 World Cup, co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka, was a big success.
“The ICC board, keen to build on the success of the event, agreed to expand the next edition of the tournament to 10 teams (from 8 teams in 2025). Nearly 300,000 fans watched the event in stadia, breaking the record for tournament attendance for any women’s cricket event. The tournament also witnessed viewership growth and new records being set for on-screen audiences across the world, with nearly 500 million viewers in India,” it further stated,” an ICC release stated.
The India vs South Africa match in the ICC Women’s World Cup 2025 drew 185 million viewers, matching the viewership of the Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 final between the same teams.
Overall, the tournament reached 446 million people, which is more than the combined digital audience of the last three Women’s World Cups. On November 2, around 21 million viewers watched as the India women’s cricket team lifted their first-ever ODI World Cup trophy.
