How Can Afghanistan Qualify For ICC Champions Trophy 2025 Semi-Final?
The ICC Champions Trophy 2025 match between Afghanistan and Australia, which took place on February 28 at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium, was called off due to rain. Since the match couldn’t be completed, both teams received one point each.
With this, Australia has secured a spot in the semi-finals, finishing the group stage with four points from three matches in Group B. Afghanistan is in a tough spot with three points. They still have a small chance of making it through, but it’s no longer in their control. They now have to hope that other match results work in their favor.
Afghanistan can reach the semi-finals of the 2025 Champions Trophy only if South Africa loses its last Group B match against England on Saturday, March 1, in Karachi by a big margin. For Afghanistan to qualify, South Africa must either lose by at least 207 runs if they bat second or, if they bat first and score 300 runs, England must chase the target in just 11.1 overs.
If this happens, both South Africa and Afghanistan will end up with 3 points each from 3 matches. However, Hashmatullah Shahidi’s team will go through because of a better net run rate.
If the England against South Africa match in Karachi on Saturday is rained out, South Africa will go through to the semifinals with four points from three games, joining Australia. This would mean Afghanistan is knocked out. But if South Africa beats England, they will finish at the top of the group and play against the team that loses Sunday’s India against New Zealand match in the semifinals.
