Hardik Pandya Under Pressure as Mumbai Indians Consider Major Leadership Change

Hardik Pandya’s turbulent stint as Mumbai Indians captain could be nearing its conclusion after another disappointing IPL campaign. According to a report by The Indian Express, the franchise is seriously considering a leadership change following a disastrous IPL 2026 season in which MI won just four of their 14 matches and finished ninth in the standings. Discussions are expected to focus not only on Pandya’s captaincy but also on his long-term place in the squad.

The development comes just two years after one of the most controversial decisions in IPL history, when Mumbai Indians replaced five-time title-winning captain Rohit Sharma with Pandya ahead of the 2024 season. Since then, MI have struggled to recapture their former dominance, registering two bottom-two finishes in three seasons. Sources within the franchise suggest that there is a growing belief that major changes are needed if the team is to return to title contention.

One of the key concerns reportedly revolves around the relationship between the players and the coaching staff. According to reports, the management was unhappy with instances where senior players failed to fully embrace the team’s data-driven strategies and recommendations. The coaching group had emphasized the importance of being adaptable and coachable, but there were occasions when plans backed by analytics were allegedly ignored. This has prompted deeper introspection into the team culture and leadership structure.

Pandya’s individual performances have also come under scrutiny. Since returning to Mumbai Indians in 2024, he has not scored a single half-century in the IPL. While his role as a finisher means he is not judged solely on big scores, his overall batting returns have been underwhelming. In IPL 2026, he managed just 146 runs in 10 innings at an average of 22.88 and a strike rate of 138.25. Alarmingly, he recorded strike rates below 100 in four of those innings, highlighting his struggles to consistently impact games.

His bowling numbers have not provided much relief either. Across the last three seasons, Pandya has taken 29 wickets but at an economy rate of 10.5. In IPL 2026 specifically, he claimed only four wickets while conceding runs at an economy of 11.42. Questions have also been raised over his tactical decisions, including bowling changes, batting-order shuffles, and the inability to settle on the best role for players such as Tilak Varma. While senior players have also underperformed, the captain has inevitably borne much of the criticism.

Mumbai’s overall approach has also been questioned. While teams such as Rajasthan Royals and Sunrisers Hyderabad adapted to the league’s increasingly aggressive batting trends, MI often appeared tactically behind the curve, particularly in the Powerplay. Despite possessing one of the strongest squads on paper, the franchise failed to translate talent into results. A senior insider revealed that every aspect of the team setup will be reviewed, including whether Pandya should continue as captain or even remain in the side purely as a player.

With a captaincy record of 15 wins and 24 losses in 39 matches, Pandya has a win percentage of just 38.46% as Mumbai Indians skipper. While the franchise has yet to make an official announcement, the signs point toward significant changes ahead of IPL 2027. After six years without a title and another disappointing season, Mumbai Indians appear ready to make some tough decisions in their pursuit of a return to the top.
