Daryl Mitchell Ruled Out of WI ODIs After Groin Injury; Henry Nicholls Named Replacement

Daryl Mitchell, the New Zealand all-rounder, has been ruled out of the ODI series against West Indies after hurting his thigh while scoring a century in the first match. He didn’t come back to the field for the second innings and a scan later showed a small groin tear that needs about two weeks to heal. Henry Nicholls, who was brought in for the second ODI will stay with the team as Mitchell’s replacement.

Mitchell is likely to recover in time for the three-Test series against West Indies, which begins on December 2 at Hagley Oval. Head coach Rob Walter said it’s always tough for a player to miss games because of an injury, especially when someone is playing as well as Daryl. He added that Mitchell has been their best ODI performer this season, so they will miss him in the next two matches. The good news is that the injury is small and Mitchell should be fully fit for the Test series.

“Henry has been playing really well in the Ford Trophy, and he has good international experience, so it’s great to have him back in the team. It’s always nice to give chances to players who are in good form, and we know Henry will be eager to perform if he gets the opportunity.” Head coach Rob Walter said.
