The Champions Trophy was incepted by the ICC in 1998 but was then held every four years under the name ICC Knockout Tournament. The motive behind the tournament was largely to aid the generation of funds for cricket in test-less countries. However, the tournament soon gained popularity, and it had to move to established cricketing countries like England and India.

South Africa won the first edition of the Champions Trophy in Bangladesh. This, to date, is the only ICC trophy won by the Proteas.
