South African captain Temba Bavuma, after coming from an injury break, has scored four 50+ scores in four consecutive innings, taking South Africa to the top of the WTC table. He has scored a total of 327 runs in the series with an exceptional average of 81.75.
Injury and Comeback
Bavuma suffered an elbow injury during the ODI series against Ireland in October. After enhanced medical support and an intense rehabilitation program, Bavuma has returned strongly. Reportedly, he received guidance from legends like AB de Villiers and Chris Gayle, and he learned more about managing injuries later in his career. After a lot of hard work and practice, Bavuma came back in the series against Sri Lanka and scored 327 runs in the series, becoming the man of the series.
Series Performances
In the first test match at Kingsmead, Durban, in the first inning, he scored a fighting 70 in 117 balls with nine blundered and a six. In the second innings, he scored a match-winning 113 in 228 balls with nine boundaries. He also formed an essential and massive 249-run partnership with Tristan Stubbs, which played a monumental role in the victory. Tristan also scored a century alongside him.
In the second test at St. George Park, he scored a much-needed 78 while building a 133-run partnership with Ryan Rickelston after the early wickets. He hit eight boundaries and a six in the innings with a 71.56 strike rate. Bavuma scored 66 of 116 balls in the second innings, hitting three boundaries and two massive sixes.
His performances were more valuable. He got an elbow injury, and after the medication, it was not easy for him to bat. But with his relentless practice in the nets and exercise, he made the comeback.
He did exceptional work on the field as team captain, not just with the bat. Whether it's well-planned strategies with Keshav Maharaj, who took a 5-wicket haul in the second innings of the last test match, or the bowling changes at the best time, which helped finish the Sri Lankan innings early.
After his performances with bat and as captain, South Africa has won the two-match test series against Sri Lanka and made its way to the top of the WTC points table. With a view to win upcoming test matches against Pakistan, South Africa is looking for its maiden appearance under Temba Bavuma's captaincy.
