Joe Root's Innovative Solution to Frequent Ball Changes: Limit to Three in 80 Overs
England's batting star Joe Root proposed an intriguing solution to the frequent requests for ball changes. The Indian team had twice requested a new ball on that very day, prompting Root to share his thoughts.
“Personally, I believe that if teams keep asking for ball changes, we should allow each team three challenges every 80 overs, similar to the Decision Review System, while also considering the impact on over rates,” Root said after scoring his 37th Test century with 104 runs.
"This would be a fair compromise. Sometimes, the ball just doesn't swing or seam as expected, and it's not always the manufacturer's fault," he added. Over rates have been a significant topic in the series, and frequent ball changes have exacerbated the issue. Indian bowler Jasprit Bumrah had previously suggested that hot weather conditions should be taken into account when addressing slow over rates.
However, Root was not pleased with the numerous stoppages in play due to the Indian team's insistence on changing the ball.
"But you can't keep asking for a new ball and slow down the game at the same time. There's no need to make a big deal out of it," Root remarked, referring to India's repeated requests during the morning session.
Root also expressed his delight over Jofra Archer's promising return to Test cricket.
"There was genuine joy on his face when he took that wicket. He's an X-factor player, and he's shown that. He's going to play a big part in this game," Root added.
