BCCI Withdraws from Women’s and Men’s Asia Cup Amid India-Pakistan Tensions

BCCI Withdraws from Women’s and Men’s Asia Cup Amid India-Pakistan TensionsIn a big move, the BCCI has officially pulled out of all its Asia Cup commitments. While tensions between India and Pakistan have been rising, the decision doesn’t come as a huge shock. Still, it’s a significant one especially since India was supposed to host a T20-format Asia Cup later this year.

The BCCI has communicated to the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) that it will not participate in the Women’s Emerging Teams Asia Cup in Sri Lanka next month, and has also pulled out of the Men’s Asia Cup scheduled for September. The ACC is currently chaired by Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, who also heads the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).

According to Indian Express sources, this decision reflects a wider approach of keeping Indian cricket separate from Pakistan. A BCCI official explained, “The Indian team can’t play in a tournament that is organised by the ACC whose chief is a Pakistan minister. That’s the sentiment of the nation. We’ve verbally informed the ACC about pulling out of the Women’s Emerging Teams Asia Cup, and our future participation in their events is also on hold. We’re in regular contact with the Indian government.”

Broadcasters Face Huge Setback Amid India Pullout

Mohsin Naqvi took over as ACC chairman after India’s Jay Shah stepped up to become the ICC chairman. With India now opting out, the future of the Men’s Asia Cup is hanging by a thread. Broadcasters and sponsors many of them from India had poured significant money into the tournament, counting on marquee matchups like India vs Pakistan to drive viewership. Sony Pictures Networks India, which holds the current broadcast rights, signed an eight-year deal worth $170 million just last year.

Sony Sports Network could already see a massive drop in viewers since big names like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma won’t be playing in the England vs India Test series. This isn’t the first time politics have affected the Asia Cup. In 2023, India didn’t travel to Pakistan and played their Asia Cup matches in Sri Lanka instead. A similar thing happened in the 2024 Champions Trophy — India played in Dubai, ended up winning the tournament, while Pakistan missed the chance to host the final.

If the Asia Cup is cancelled, teams like Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Afghanistan will also lose money. They all get a big share of the tournament's media rights revenue.
