2025-26 Ashes Series: Perth to Open, Brisbane's Day-Night Test, and Adelaide's New Slot

2025-26 Ashes Series: Perth to Open, Brisbane's Day-Night Test, and Adelaide's New Slot

The 2025-26 Ashes series is set to bring a fresh twist to the traditional format, with Cricket Australia (CA) announcing a revamped schedule. The series will kick off with the first Test at Perth's Optus Stadium from November 21-25, marking a departure from the long-standing tradition of the Gabba hosting the opener.

In a significant shift, the second Test will be a day-night affair under lights at Brisbane's Gabba, utilizing the pink ball, from December 4-8. This will be followed by the third Test at Adelaide, which will be a day game from December 17-21. The Adelaide Test will now occupy a prime holiday slot, a move aimed at capitalizing on the Test's tourism appeal.

The iconic Boxing Day Test will continue its tradition at the MCG, starting on December 26, while Sydney will host the fifth and final Test from January 4-8.

This reshuffle has been in the works since CA's announcement of its fixturing contracts with state governments in August. Adelaide, the home of day-night Tests since 2015, has previously hosted the second Test in the Ashes series rotation. However, the move to place Adelaide in the third slot reflects a strategic decision to enhance its status as a marquee event.

The Gabba, which has been the venue for three day-night Tests including West Indies' historic win earlier this year, faces an uncertain future due to redevelopment plans for the 2032 Olympics. There is speculation that the upcoming Ashes Test could be the last at the Gabba, as no Tests are scheduled post-2025-26, and the stadium may become unusable by 2030.

While there has been criticism over not maintaining the Gabba as the opening Test venue, the Australian team is reportedly comfortable with Perth's Optus Stadium hosting the first Test, given their unbeaten record there. However, there is less enthusiasm for the pink ball at the Gabba, as Australian bowlers have expressed concerns that it performs better at the Adelaide Oval.

The 2025-26 Ashes series promises to be a thrilling encounter between Australia and England, with the new schedule adding an extra layer of intrigue to this storied rivalry. Cricket fans around the world will be eagerly anticipating the action as the two teams battle it out across Australia's iconic cricket grounds.
