“We Are Definitely Looking at Rohit and Kohli for 2027” – Shubman Gill on Senior Players Future

After Rohit Sharma was replaced by Shubman Gill as the ODI captain before the Australia tour, there was a lot of talk about Rohit’s future in international cricket alongside Virat Kohli. Many thought the ODI series against Australia could be their last. However, chief selector Ajit Agarkar said in a press conference that they are not giving any clear answer about the players’ participation in the 2027 ODI World Cup. On the other hand, Gill said that both senior players are still part of the plans for the big tournament in South Africa.

“The experience they have and the number of matches they have won for India, there are very few players who have (done) that. There are very few players in the world with such skill, quality and experience. From that perspective, we are definitely looking at them for 2027.” Gill told reporters before the second Test against the West Indies.

Gill also spoke about the qualities he has learned from Rohit after taking over as India’s Test captain. He said he already knew about being made the ODI captain before it was officially announced during the first Test at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Gill highlighted the traits of Rohit that he wants to carry forward. He also wants to keep the same friendly bond with teammates while leading India, just like Rohit did, during India’s wins in the T20 World Cup 2024 and the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.

“And there are so many qualities I have learned from Rohit bhai. His calm nature and the way he keeps friendships strong in the team are things I admire and want to follow. These are the qualities I want to carry forward,” Gill said.

Rohit and Kohli will return to professional cricket during India’s white-ball tour of Australia later this month. The three-match ODI series will start in Perth on Sunday, October 19, followed by five T20I matches.

The new ODI captaincy will be on show when Gill leads India against Mitchell Marsh’s Australia in the first match at Perth Stadium. Unlike his Test captaincy debut, Gill can turn to Rohit and Kohli for advice in ODIs if he needs support against the strong Australian team.
