USA Cricket (USAC) Rejects American Cricket Enterprises (ACE) Proposal, Files Bankruptcy Amid ICC Suspension

US CricketUSA Cricket (USAC) shocked many by filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on October 1, just minutes before a court hearing over its dispute with American Cricket Enterprises (ACE). This is the first time an ICC member has gone bankrupt. The hearing was stopped after USAC’s lawyers informed the court, while ACE raised doubts about the timing of this move.

“USAC could not bear for the preliminary injunction hearing to even begin, and knew the result was a forgone conclusion: it had no basis to terminate the parties' agreement and was recklessly imperiling the success of cricket in the U.S. USAC has zero regard for the best interests of cricket and its players, and is only motivated by politics and its directors' personal agendas", an ACE representative said as quoted by Cricbuzz.

Players Contracts Are Now at Risk Amid Bankruptcy Filing

Filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy means USAC will have to reveal all its finances, including cash in the bank, money owed to them, office equipment and other small assets. But the bigger worry is that players’ contracts, even for international cricketers, are now at risk. Earlier, ACE had offered to cover the players’ payments under the agreement, but only if USAC agreed to a preliminary injunction.

Along with filing for bankruptcy, USAC also turned down ACE’s proposal and refused to step down, even after being suspended by the ICC. This chain of events has left players uncertain about their future. Their contracts are set to end on December 31, 2025, but it’s unclear if they will receive full payments, face delays or have to accept reduced amounts after renegotiation.

Since USAC has filed for bankruptcy, the case will now move from the Colorado court to a federal bankruptcy court. Earlier, after suspending USAC, the ICC had assured that players would not be affected. However, with this sudden move, the ICC has not yet made an official statement leaving everyone waiting for clarity.
