TNPL 2025: Ravichandran Ashwin Ball Tampering Allegations Stir Fresh Controversy

Ravichandran Ashwin is once again in the news during the ninth season of the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL). After recently getting into trouble for arguing with an on-field umpire, he's now facing fresh accusations. This time, one of the teams has accused him of tampering with the ball.
As per a report by The Indian Express, the Siechem Madurai Panthers have accused R Ashwin and his team, the Dindigul Dragons, of ball tampering during their match on Saturday, June 14, at the SCF Cricket Ground in Salem. This incident took place during the ongoing Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL), where both teams are among the eight competing in the tournament.
In a written complaint to the TNPL, the Madurai Panthers alleged that Ashwin and his team used towels, allegedly treated with chemicals, to alter the condition of the ball. They also claimed that the tampering continued despite “repeated warnings”.
TNPL Chief: No Evidence Yet, Madurai Must Prove Claims Against Ashwin
But TNPL CEO Prasanna Kannan, as mentioned in the report, said there’s no clear sign of anything wrong for now. He asked the Madurai Panthers to bring solid proof if they believe Ashwin and the Dindigul team did something unfair.
“They have filed a complaint, which we have acknowledged. Although complaints are to be lodged within 24 hours of the match, we have still accepted it and asked them to provide proof of their allegations,” Prasanna told the newspaper.
“We will form an independent committee if there is any substance to the claims. Without sufficient evidence, it is inappropriate to level such accusations against a player or franchise. If no evidence is presented, the Madurai Panthers will face sanctions,” he added.
Prasanna also explained that the TNPL allows players to use towels given by the league to dry the ball, but only in front of the umpires. He said this rule was made because the matches are being played during the monsoon season in Tamil Nadu, when the ball can often get wet.
Ashwin Fined Earlier in the Season
Earlier in the season, Ashwin was fined 30 percent of his match fee for showing dissent at an umpiring decision during Dindigul’s match against the Tiruppur Tamizhans on 6 June 6.
Defending champions Dindigul, currently placed fifth with two wins from three games, will face Chepauk Super Gillies on Monday, June 16, in Salem.
