The Pataudi Legacy Remains Linked to England-India Series Despite Trophy Renaming to Anderson-Tendulkar
The upcoming Test series between India and England will feature a new name for the trophy, honoring two cricket legends, Sachin Tendulkar and James Anderson. The Pataudi Trophy was first introduced in 2007 to mark 75 years since India played their first-ever Test match against England at Lord’s in 1932.
Tendulkar-Anderson Trophy to be Unveiled Ahead of India-England Test Series
According to a report by the BBC, the new Tendulkar-Anderson Trophy will be officially revealed before the start of the Test series on June 20 in Leeds. The unveiling will happen at Lord’s during the World Test Championship final on June 11. Both Sachin Tendulkar and James Anderson are expected to attend the event.
Between 2006 and 2012, Sachin Tendulkar and James Anderson played against each other in 14 Test matches. During those games, Tendulkar scored 208 runs, but Anderson got him out nine times more than any other bowler in Tendulkar’s Test career.
India and England have contested the Pataudi Trophy during the Test series in England. The Men in Blue won the inaugural edition, while England claimed it in 2011, 2014, and 2018.
The Pataudi name will continue to be linked with the England-India series
Boria Majumdar mentioned that the trophy will likely be called the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, not Tendulkar-Anderson. But he also made it clear that the important legacy of Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi will still be remembered and honored in the India-England Test series.
"There's been quite a debate about the renaming of the Pataudi Trophy to the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. It's not the Tendulkar-Anderson Trophy — it will be the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, from what I know. But that's not the news. The Pataudi name is not being dissociated from the series," Boria said.
ECB and BCCI Clarify: Trophy Renaming Is Not About Disrespecting Pataudi’s Legacy
Boria Majumdar said that the BCCI and ECB don’t want to disrespect the Pataudi family by changing the trophy’s name. He mentioned that while the trophy will get a new name, the Pataudi name will still be connected to the Test series between India and England.
"The idea of the ECB and the BCCI is not to show any disrespect to the Pataudi family or their legacy. From what I understand, the Pataudi legacy and name will continue to be associated with the series, while only the trophy is being renamed," Boria added.
Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, known by his 'Tiger' moniker, represented India from 1961-1975. He shaped Indian cricket and built a legacy with his career. Pataudi, who is still the youngest Test captain in Indian cricket, featured for the country in 46 Tests, amassing 2793 runs, including six centuries.
He also represented England's county side, Sussex for 13 years and brought England and Indian cricket together, which is why the BCCI and ECB decided to honour his legacy with a series named after him in 2007. At present, India will tour England.
