Shreyas Iyer Takes Six-Month Red-Ball Break, to Lead India A in One-Day Series Against Australia A

After much speculation, the BCCI has confirmed that Shreyas Iyer has asked for a six-month break from red-ball cricket. This news comes just before India announces its Test squad for the upcoming home series against the West Indies. Meanwhile, Iyer will lead the India A team in a two-match unofficial one-day series against Australia A, starting September 30. The decision follows Iyer's recurring back issues stemming from a surgery Iyer underwent in the UK in 2023.
Shreyas Iyer Takes Six-Month Break from Red-Ball Cricket Due to Back Issues
He had previously managed these challenges during the last Ranji Trophy season by taking short breaks, but sustained involvement in longer-format games was no longer feasible. As a result, Iyer withdrew from India A’s second unofficial Test against Australia A in Kanpur, with vice-captain Dhruv Jurel stepping in to lead the side.
"Mr Shreyas Iyer has informed the BCCI of his decision to take a six-month break from red-ball cricket. Having undergone back surgery in the UK and managed his recovery well, he has recently experienced recurring back spasms and stiffness while playing the longer format. He wishes to utilise this period to build endurance, body resilience and work on his fitness. In view of his decision, he was not considered for selection for the Irani Cup." the BCCI statement said.
Shreyas Iyer to Lead India A in One-Day Series vs Australia A
Shreyas Iyer was expected to come back for India’s upcoming Test series against the West Indies, especially since Karun Nair, who played in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy against England in July, didn’t make a big impact. With Iyer taking a break, the selectors now need to rethink and adjust the team’s middle-order. For the India A one-day series against Australia A, Shreyas Iyer will captain a side including Prabhsimran Singh (WK), Riyan Parag, Ayush Badoni, Suryansh Shedge, and Vipraj Nigam.
Joining the squad for the second and third matches will be Tilak Verma, Abhishek Sharma, Harshit Rana, and Arshdeep Singh, who are available after completing their commitments with the senior team in the Asia Cup.
