Rohit Sharma to Play Vijay Hazare Trophy with Virat Kohli Ahead of India vs New Zealand ODIs

It appears that not only Virat Kohli but also Rohit Sharma is set to increase the star power of the Vijay Hazare Trophy (VHT). Even as India’s star Virat Kohli’s is in the probable list with Delhi has been released for the biggest 50-over domestic competition, Rohit Sharma is not yet confirmed.

Rohit Sharma likely to Play in Vijay Hazare Trophy before India vs New Zealand ODIs

As per RevSportz, the ex-captain of the Indian side is most probably going to play for Mumbai in a couple of matches in the Vijay Hazare Trophy series in order to get some practice before India’s upcoming ODI series. Following India’s victory against South Africa, the Indian side is going to face New Zealand in their upcoming ODI series, set to begin on the 11th of January. There is sufficient time now, and it is most probable that Rohit, as well as Kohli, who are playing only the ODI format, might make an appearance in the domestic matches.

"Squad selection is going to be match-to-match, but we are expecting Rohit to play a couple of games, although we are waiting for confirmation from him. There is still time. The squad is going to be selected next week, most probably after the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. India has a series of ODIs against New Zealand, so it depends on his availability," a source from MCA revealed to RevSportz.

Although Virat Kohli was in beast mode against the SA, Rohit wasn’t far behind. In fact, although he didn’t reach a hundred as he did at Sydney, he scored two fifty-plus scores in the three matches. The openings, against such a strong South African attack, were seized by him as he was picking the length quickly.

Now, with his better fitness, Rohit wants to extend his international career, with one eye on a high finish in the ODI World Cup 2027. Naturally, the Hitman now wants to make the most of his available playing hours in this era where ODIs are played less. Having ended the calendar with 650 runs (just 1 run short of what Kohli accumulated), Rohit wants to make the most of his success. Therefore, he is still on the Mumbai Cricket Association’s (MCA) list to remain part of the VHT.

The competition is set to take place from December 24 onwards, giving Rohit availability until January 8, before the IND vs NZ matches kick off (from January 11). It is yet to be known how many matches Rohit will make himself available for. Mumbai, a part of Elite Group C, is going to play all their matches at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur.
