Report: BCCI postpones meeting on central contracts and England series
The BCCI meeting that was scheduled for Saturday, March 29, in Guwahati has been postponed. A new date for the meeting hasn’t been decided yet. The meeting was supposed to cover important topics like the men’s team’s central contracts and the preparations for the England tour. Since the meeting has been delayed, the announcement of the central contracts will also be pushed back, according to a report by India Today.
The meeting was planned to have talks with head coach Gautam Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar. The main focus was to finalise the list of central contracts and decide on the future Test captain. Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah, and Ravindra Jadeja are likely to keep their A-plus contracts.
According to the report, there are ongoing discussions about Rohit Sharma’s future in Test cricket as well. Also, Virat Kohli is under scrutiny, as the England tour could decide his fate in the Test cricket. India is set to play 5 Test matches in England, starting June 20 in Leeds.
Latest additions to the contract list
A few new players are expected to be added to the central contracts list, with Shreyas Iyer likely to make a comeback. Shreyas, along with Ishan Kishan, was left out of the contracts list last year. However, after his strong performances in the recent Champions Trophy, the Mumbai batter is now set to regain his spot in the contracts list.
Varun Chakravarthy is likely to earn a BCCI contract after his impressive performance in India's Champions Trophy win in Dubai. He was India's key bowler, taking 9 wickets in just 3 matches and playing a crucial role in helping India lift the trophy.
Besides the central contracts, another big topic is the future of the Test team after their recent poor performances. Talks were planned to discuss the availability and future of some players in Test cricket, especially with the England tour coming up soon.
India's tour of England will include five Test matches, with the first game set to begin on June 20 in Leeds.
