RCB's Squad Overhaul(Part 2): Coaches, Weaknesses and Playing 11
In the last article, we discussed RCB's teaSm, auction buys, and batting, bowling & fielding departments. In this article, we will talk about RCB'sleadership group, support staff, weaknesses, and mistakes. Virat Kohli is expected to return as Captain of the team again after the release of Faf du Plessis so team’s leadership will probably be in his hands.
Coaches:
Head Coach: Andy Flower
Batting Coach and Mentor: Dinesh Karthik
Assistant Coach: Richard Halsall
Bowling Coach: Omkar Salvi
Spin Bowling Coach: Malolan Rangarajan
Mo Boabat is continuing as Director of Cricket Operations,
The comprehensive squad rebuild, with eight overseas professionals and fourteen Indian players, positions RCB strongly for IPL 2025. The balance between experienced internationals and promising domestic talents suggests they have a fair chance of lifting the trophy.
Weaknesses: Spin Department
One of the major weaknesses in the squad is the spin department. There is only one recognized spinner, Suyash Sharma, despite Krunal Pandya as the all-rounder being part of the team, RCB might need a proper spinner for the turning pitches like in Chennai. RCB spent less than 4% of their total purse on spinners, compared to other teams that spend over 10% on this critical role. This indicates a lack of focus on strengthening their spin attack.
In the past, players like Yuzvendra Chahal, Wanindu Hasaranga, and Adam Zampa have been integral to RCB's bowling unit. However, the absence of a proper specialist spinner now is concerning. RCB management plans to rely on Suyash and Krunal for the spin department with few overs from Liam Livingston, Whether this gamble pays off remains to be seen after the season.
Mistakes In the Auction:
One potential mistake RCB might have made is allowing Will Jacks to slip to Mumbai Indians. RCB has a track record of not sticking with their players, which reflects a lack of long-term vision. This approach has also been reflected in their trophy-less history.
