KL Rahul's failure to adapt to the evolving landscape of T20 batting has resulted in his not being retained by Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). The franchise has chosen Nicholas Pooran, a dynamic finisher, as their top pick, following the recommendations of head coach Justin Langer and mentor Zaheer Khan. Reports from PTI in August suggested that Rahul's subpar strike rate could jeopardize his captaincy. LSG has now confirmed Pooran's retention along with pace bowler Mayank Yadav, leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi, and uncapped player Ayush Badoni for the upcoming IPL auctions.
An insider revealed to PTI that LSG's decision was heavily influenced by performance metrics over the last three years, particularly Rahul's batting style and strike rate. Rahul's strike rates during his tenure with LSG were 136.13, 113.23, and 135.38, which are deemed insufficient in today's fast-paced T20 format, especially as the national team has also shifted its approach.
In contrast, Pooran, who predominantly bats in the challenging middle order, boasted a strike rate of 144.34 in 2022, followed by impressive figures of 172.95 and 178.21 in subsequent seasons. The source noted that despite Rahul accumulating 520 runs in 2024, it did not contribute to the team's success, as crucial matches hinged on powerplay performance.
Pooran remains a well-respected figure in the team and a key leader moving forward.
