Shreyas Iyer Leads Record Chase as PBKS Hunt Down 264 vs Delhi Capitals

Delhi Capitals made a massive 264/2 in 20 overs, which should have been enough. But Shreyas Iyer’s team chased it down easily, finishing with 7 balls left. It became the highest successful run chase ever in IPL and T20 history. The home team has themselves to blame. The bowling was ordinary and the fielding was atrocious. We saw a bazillion catches go down.
A couple of them, were straightforward, regulation chances, both off the bat of Shreyas Iyer, both spilled by Karun Nair. And from there, there was no returning back. Iyer finished with an unbeaten 71* (36), shepherding the team over the finish line yet again, and making sure that their reign on the top of the table continues.
Though, credit must also go to Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh, the duo that laid the foundation of this massive run chase. They had a mountain in front of them. But it did not deter the spirits of the two young openers. They came out with confidence and crystal clear intent. Both smashed their first balls for a six each and that was just the beginning. The partnership reached 50 in 2.5 overs and then, 100 in 5.2 overs. Every time they swung their bats, the ball seemed to fly a mile. Prabhsimran went on to notch-up an 18 ball half-century, while Arya fell for a 17-ball-43.
Record Chase Stuns Delhi Capitals Despite 264-Run Total
A ray of hope emerged for Delhi Capitals when both the openers were dismissed in quick succession. It was soon followed by the wicket of Cooper Connolly. PBKS lost 3 men in a span of 2.5 overs. However, Shreyas Iyer ensured that there were no further hiccups. He stitched two partnerships, one with Nehal Wadhera and the other with Shashank Singh and took the team home.
DC were hampered by the absence of Lungi Ngidi, who injured himself earlier while trying to take a catch. He had to be carried off in an ambulance. Though, the good news is that he is stable and will be discharged from the hospital soon. He was replaced by concussion substitue Vipraj Nigam, who despite getting the wicket of Wadhera, failed to have much of an impact with the ball.
Earlier, KL Rahul and Nitish Rana had stolen the show. After electing to bat first on a scorching afternoon, Delhi Capitals made the visitors feel the heat, at least for the first half of the match. They lost Nissanka early but then, the aforementioned duo stitched a mighty 220 run stand for the 2nd wicket. Rana scored 91, his highest in the IPL, while, KL Rahul went on to make the biggest score by an Indian batter in this league.
He unleashed one sumptuous shot after the other, most while keeping his shape. Much like Iyer, he too was helped by a couple of dropped catches, one by Shashank Singh and the other by Vyshak Vijaykumar, off his own bowling. His scintillating knock set the stadium alight and made the DC fans roar with exuberance throughout the afternoon. Alas, the script flipped in the second half and the home team ended up on the losing side.
