PSL teams can submit two playing XIs before the toss to offset the dew advantage

The opening game of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) between Hyderabad Kingsmen and Lahore Qalandars saw both captains submitting two playing XI sheets ahead of the toss. This falls under the new league rule that allows teams to have two separate team sheets and select one based on the toss result.

Why was the rule introduced?

The rule was introduced to lessen the dew advantage, which is likely to play a major role in the tournament. Dew, which is a usual occurrence in night games, especially in Asia, reduces the usefulness of spinners. With the ball being wet, the spinners cannot easily grip it, hence reducing their effectiveness. Usually, this gives the team winning the toss an edge.

Under this rule, though, a team, if it is batting first after the toss, can choose the list with fewer spin options.

What does the rule say?

Clause 1.2.1 in the "Nomination and Replacement of Players" mentions the new rule:

"Before the toss, each captain may submit two (2) different XI lineups in writing to the PSL Match Referee. Each lineup must include 11 players and a maximum of 4 substitute fielders (subject to Clause 1.2.5).”

“After the toss, each captain must finalise one of the two submitted lineups by signing the selected team sheet. Once the final lineup has been nominated, no player listed in the selected playing eleven may be changed before the start of the match without the consent of the opposing captain."
